Sri Lanka initiated their Super Fours campaign in the Asia Cup 2023 with a 21-run victory over Bangladesh in Colombo on Saturday, September 9. This victory effectively eliminated the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh side from the tournament. Bangladesh had previously suffered a defeat to the hosts, Pakistan, in their first Super Four encounter. With this second consecutive loss, their chances of securing a spot in the final three teams competing for a place in the summit clash were extinguished.
The Sri Lankan bowlers showcased their skills right from the beginning, well aware that they were defending a modest total of 257 runs. Although they secured their first wicket after the powerplay, they broke crucial partnerships, recognizing the opportunity to penetrate Bangladesh's middle order. Sri Lanka managed to claim a couple more wickets in under four overs, reducing Bangladesh to a score of 70/3, which included the significant dismissal of skipper Shakib Al Hasan in the 12th over.
Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka spearheaded the bowling attack, claiming two of the initial three wickets, while the promising talent Matheesha Pathirana, discovered by MS Dhoni, dismissed Shakib Al Hasan. Following these breakthroughs, the spinners took center stage, with Dunith Wellalage making a significant breakthrough by removing Litton Das from the crease.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hriday then built a resilient 72-run partnership for the fourth wicket, raising hopes of a Bangladesh comeback and upsetting Sri Lanka's plans. However, Shanaka, just as he had disrupted the opening partnership earlier, once again played the role of the partnership-breaker, ending this promising alliance that had started to threaten Sri Lanka. Shanaka then turned to his ace spinner, Maheesh Theekshana, who delivered the crucial breakthrough.
Theekshana made a significant impact by taking three wickets in just 2.3 overs, including the dismissal of Hriday, who had played brilliantly to score 82 runs. Theekshana's crucial breakthrough came when Bangladesh was struggling at 200 for 8. Despite Nasum Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud's efforts, the target proved to be too challenging for the lower-order batsmen to chase down.
Prior to this, Sadeera Samarawickrama played an exceptional innings, scoring 93 runs off 72 balls, which played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka's total of over 250. Samarawickrama's innings deserves special mention because, on a challenging pitch, where strokemaking was difficult, especially against the slower bowlers, he maintained a strike rate of 129. It's worth noting that the second-highest strike rate for a player facing more than 30 balls in the innings was only 75.
Sri Lanka's next match in the Asia Cup Super Fours will be against India on Tuesday, September 12.
